This photograph is one of my favorites, perhaps for a slightly weird reason. Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved to imagine what daily life would be like if I were different people, living in different places, or even if I were an inanimate object. For instance if I see a big, beautiful oak tree, I personify it and think, "I wonder what this tree sees everyday. Maybe the same cars coming and going from work? I wonder how long it has been here. Maybe before there were roads or people anywhere nearby. It must be strange to live so long." Kind of weird, right? Well I do this a lot with places. When I shot this photo, I was wondering what it would be like to live in that apartment building. In that moment, I can travel inside the photograph, inside one of those apartments and see what their view would be. I imagine what kind of things they've seen with all the passersby. I imagine how much the view changes from the stark chill of winter to the warm breeze of summer and how exciting it must be to watch the flowers bloom. My mom said when I was a little girl, riding in the car, if my siblings tried to get my attention I'd say, "Please be quiet. I'm thinking." To this day, I take a drive almost evernight with my family, just to cruise around a think for a while. Many of my photographs are taken on these drives. I love this photograph because it represents these strange little daydreams.
